African heritage to be celebrated in Tuscombia

Residents will have the opportunity Saturday to learn about African culture and history.

The ninth Shoals African Heritage Festival begins at 11 a.m. at the Willie Green Center in Tuscumbia and continues throughout the day.

City Councilman George Johnson, whose district includes the Willie Green Center, said about 500 people attended 2008’s event, and he wouldn’t be surprised to see more this year.

“This event continues to grow,” Johnson said. “We’ll have vendors from Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. It’s a free event and opportunity to learn more about African culture.”

Mayor Bill Shoemaker said the festivities are impressive.

“They are planning to have a large group of people in town,” he said. “This is always well planned and a great celebration. They do an excellent job.”

Exhibits feature African art, fashion, culture, crafts and food, said Susann Hamlin, director of the Colbert County Tourism Office.

She said entertainment includes a fraternity and sorority step show and other dance demonstrations, including the Umdabu Dancers. The Birmingham-based dance company focuses on preservation and contemporary South African history and culture, particularly of the Zulus.

Johannes “Jomo” Xulu, a South African dancer, choreographer and drummer, formed the company in 2000.

The Kush Reggae Band, of Huntsville, will also perform.

“This is a family-friendly event and a great community event,” Hamlin said. “Families are encouraged to come out and bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.”

She said health screenings are available and a blood drive will take place.
